There are many different patterns
of waves, in the ocean of our lives.
These waves, sometimes soft
and gentle retreat ever so slowly
introduces us to the part of Creation
which often helps us relax, smile
and take note of God’s Beauty around us.
First just stop a few moments, close your eyes
and listen to the sound of the waves...
Then once you are ready please continue...
Try and imagine…
Cloud filled skies as the vast heavens seem
to almost touch the sea in the distance...
Breathe in deeply…can’t you just feel the breeze
in the air as the waves capture the scent of sea salt...
Pretend to bury your feet in the sand as it reaches
the depths of coolness from the heat of the sun...
Watch intently as the seagulls quickly scamper,
while the tide rushes back and forth,
as if it is playing a game of tag...
Begin to explore and hunt for the crabs that speedily
run across the sand as they disappear mysteriously
in their holes... Don't miss seeing the sunset that
reaches down and kisses the top of the water...
where dolphins dance in the silvery caps...
Days at the beach are special,
but there are also so many moments
in an ordinary day, when we can
just stop and spend time with the Lord.
Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love that
we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. (Psalms 90:14)
~ Take a minute and just worship the Lord.
Speak adoring words and praises to Him.
Consider in your heart how Mighty,
Glorious and Wonderful He is!!!
Acknowledge that to Him right now.
These quiet moments that
are spent with God, can take us
away and help us to break free
of our everyday concerns…
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way
I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. Rescue me from
my enemies, O LORD, for I hide myself in you.
Teach me to do your will, for you are my God;
may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.
For your name's sake, O LORD, preserve my life;
in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.
In your unfailing love, silence my enemies;
destroy all my foes, for I am your servant. (Psalms 143:8-12)
~ Stop and clear your mind of anything and everything.
Focus solely upon the Lord and this moment you are spending together.
Unfortunately, there is another side to the ocean’s wave,
which offers a different pattern for all who encounter its
majestic surroundings. These are reminiscent of the
days and situations when so many situations and lives
seem to be pulled into the dangerous
undertows of chaos and taken out to sea. Maybe you are being swallowed up by this huge
display of life that surrounds you…
Are you afraid you will drown?
One day Jesus said to his disciples,
"Let's go over to the other side of the lake."
So they got into a boat and set out.
As they sailed, he fell asleep.
A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was
being swamped, and they were in great danger.
The disciples went and woke him, saying,
"Master, Master, we're going to drown!" He got up and rebuked the wind and the
raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.
"Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples.
In fear and amazement they asked one another,
"Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water,
and they obey him." (Luke 8:22-25)
~ Ask the Lord to show you, where your own faith is? Is it in Him?
Is it in your circumstances? Allow Jesus to calm the storm in your heart.
You are finally cast back upon the shore, but your life appears
to be unrecognizable like the broken shells that lay in pieces on the sand.
You have become a mere victim from life’s cruel harsh waves,
which never relent or show any kind of mercy…
So you decide to walk
along those shores. After many hours
you are now tired, weary and you've wandered faraway...
You look down and still see, at your feet
broken shells, tangled moss and debris…
This is the evidence of when life's un-expected
tidal wave wreaked havoc upon your soul…
Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of
the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary and increases
the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall; but those who
hope in the LORD will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and
not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:28-31)
Once you have surveyed the damage of your own
experiences you can’t help but notice a lopsided sandcastle…
much like your own dashed hopes and dreams…
The righteous cry out, and the
LORD hears them;
he delivers them
from all their troubles.
is close to the brokenhearted and
savesthose who are crushed
in spirit. (Psalms 34:17-18)
~ Could there be something that you
need to confess to the Lord? Maybe it has been
awhile since you have spent “any”
time with Him. Perhaps, a sin
that only you know about is
haunting you and making you
feel like there is no way out.
Tell Jesus to forgive you and
to give you strength to repent
and leave it behind.
You need to realize that in all this time you haven’t
been alone and through every trial, test and temptation of your life…
There in the sand...if you look down you will see footprints...
These are your OWN footprints...
Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens,
you are there; if I make my bed in
the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
If I say, "Surely the darkness
will hide me and the light
become night around me,"
even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully
and wonderfully made; your
works are wonderful, I know
that full well. (Psalms 139:7-14)
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "
plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to
give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me
and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.
You will seek me and find me when you
seek me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:11-13)
~The thing for you to do now is to send up
a prayer of Thanksgiving. Thank God now for rescuing
you from the waves. Thank Him for all that He
has taught you about His Strength and Love.
Thank Him for showing you forgiveness and
helping you to walk in the direction toward
Him as he leads you back to safety
and carries you in His Arms of Love…
You have made known to me the path
of life; you will fill me with joy in your
presence, with eternal pleasures
at your right hand. (Psalms 16:11)
If the LORD delights in a man's way,
he makes his steps firm; though he
stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD
upholds him with his hand. (Psalms 37:23-24)
~ You know, perhaps this day at
the beach has reminded you of someone else.
Maybe you also know a struggling seafaring soul
which needs a rescue from the Lord.
Ask Him to bless that person’s
life and draw them near to Him. Then tell them
about this devotional so they too can enjoy a “Day at the Beach”.
A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. Proverbs 11:25
